Symphony No. 2's three movements refer to celestial light: Shooting Stars · Moon · and Sun. The first movement, Shooting Stars, is a depiction of quick flashes of color, filled with dance-like energy. Musical tidbits are fleeting, sprinkled throughout, keeping the ear on its toes. The second movement, Dreams Under a New Moon, represents a journey of the soul through dreams. The dream episodes vary, from mysterious and dark, to peaceful and healing. Modulation and counterpoint play a part in this one's evolution. The finale, Apollo Unleashed, is wide-ranging - from the image of Apollo (ancient god of the sun), blazing with powerful energy, to the more sublime, taken from Bach's Chorale BWV 433 (Wer Gott vertraut, hat wohl gebaut). The chorale is like a spiritual anchor, giving the entire work its foundation.
