The tritone is the most important element of Fortress. Alteration between major triads a tritone apart occurs throughout the piece. It is intended to be moderately challenging to most high school bands, very challenging to gifted junior high groups, and is roughly divided into five sections: The statement of the main idea · a "call motif" which is developed canonically · a "legato theme," taken through several key signatures, and passed from group to group · the "legato theme," restated over marcato chords · all of the piece's material, recalled over a tonic pedal.
