Bartók's research into Rumanian folk music occupied him for several years, beginning in 1909. He produced a group of piano pieces based on many of the tunes he had heard. Bartók constructed the Rumanian Folk Dances from fiddle tunes he had found in Transylvania, following the original folk melodies with little change. The dances vary in character and tempo, and are modal, some with augmented seconds.

Originally written for piano, the small orchestra version was completed in 1917.The Folk Dances are fairly direct settings of indigenous music, although Bartók did simplify some original rhythms. These are likely some of Bartock's best-known work.
