This book picks up where John Coltrane's Giant Steps/Countdown
compositions of the 1960s left off. Where Coltrane explored the Major Third Cycle only, Bob Crawford has combined this concept into a systematic approach with the work of Nicholas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales
to include many more cycles derived from the equal division of octaves to create "sheets of sound and color" heretofore unexplored. The aural result of employing this concept of simultaneously playing inside and outside the tonal center to improvisation and composition is truly astounding, adding sonic colors to musical expression so worthy of exploration.
