It Came Upon a Midnight Clear is a well-known and beloved part of the holiday season. Few people are aware that there are actually two settings of thepopular text. Richard Storrs Willis composed the American melody. IT first appeared as an organ study but was arranged as a hymn by Uzziah Christoper Burnap. THe tune sung in Britain is an adaptation and harmonization by Sir Arthur Sulliva of a melody sent to him by a friend. Edmun H. Sears, a Unitarian minister, wrote the lyrics of the hymn during his tenure as pastor of the First Church in Wayland, Massachusetts.
