The pop songs and tabloid press of their time, "broadside ballads" were distributed up and down the lands of 17th century England. Covering subjects like the Fire of London and the Gunpowder Plot alongside lusty tales & royal gossip, these comical, political, scandalous songs shine a red torch into the dark recesses of their subjects and offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives and times of the "ordinary folk."
Edited by Lucie Skeaping, who's passion is searching for forgotten songs, Broadside Ballads brings together more than 70 songs, with historical commentaries, and a host of original woodcuts taken from the original broadsheets.
Lucie Skeaping will be lecturing in the Southwest this Spring, including a stop in Arlington, TX on Thursday, April 5th. Contact the University of Texas, Arlington at email@example.com for details.
