Best known for his extremely popular Polovtsian Dances and his great opera Prince Igor, Alexander Borodin was a major Russian composer of the nineteenth century. His Symphony No. 2 took seven years to complete, and after a much-anticipated but disastrous debut, the composer rescored the work. Subsequent performances affirmed its excellence, with four movements that offer a unified construction of dramatic contrasts in mood, color, and tempo. One of the most beloved symphonies of its era, it is much studied as an example of Russian nationalist music of the Romantic period.
