The first part of Lauridsen's Nocturnes, an integrated choral cycle that can be performed on its own, or in the cycle's entirety (the three elements, with verse from three different 20th century poets). This one is based on the French poetry of German writer Rainer Maria Rilke.

The three poems used in Nocturnes are from poets of three diverse nationalities, yet the themes are shared: night, romantic love, and pantheistic rapture.
