Wilhelm Zehle was born in what was known as Prussia in 1876. He was a solo cornetist and band leader in the military, having served with the Royal German Mobile 2nd Sea Battalion. A number of his works, including Trafalgar March, won composition contests sponsored by Hawkes and Son in the early 1900s. The strong melodic and harmonic structure of his marches had a lasting influence on future composers.
