In Memoriam was commissioned by The Revelli Foundation in January 2002 following the death of Mr. L.J. Hancock, Director of Bands at Norwin High School, North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania (1976 - 2001).

Mark Camphouse has commented that he used the Communion hymn Salvation is Created by the Russian composer Pavel Chesnokov (1877 - 1944) as the central theme of In Memoriam, when he learned that Hancock had a tradition of warming-up his high school band on the field to that hymn.
