SMART (Sight Singing Made Accessible Readable Teachable) - Vol 1
This book is founded on the premise that young singers tend to view each key as a seperate "language." It addresses the needs of predominantly visual learners by organizing the materials key by key. Students are thus immersed in a key, facilitating their ability to identify at sight the steps of the scale as well as commonly found intervals within that scale.
The 1st volume of the SMART book series provides visual orientation & melodies to sight-read in seven keys. Each section begins with the scale & outlines of the tonic chord for that key, followed by a tonal (fundamental) drill. For each key, there are 8 sight- reading melodies plus a challenge melody.
Vol I, divided into levels I & II, emphasizes the intervals of 2nds & 3rds. Level II also expands upon intervals found with the tonic triad to include 4ths & 5ths.
·Exercises are written in unison octaves & treble & bass clefs.
·The initial focus identifies do& the tonic chord.
·A fundamental drill that emphasizes steps & 3rds follows the scale & notes of the tonic chord that introduce each key.
·Scales & fundamental drils utilize all the pitches that are found in the exercises.
·Note values are whole, half, quarter, 8th, dotted-half & -quarter notes.
