COMPANY HISTORY

Sheet Music Service was founded in 1917, and for more than 90 years it has been a print music retail fixture in Portland, Oregon. The business was named and renamed several times over the years. In 1917, its founding year, it was known as Maud McCawley's Sheet Music Service of Portland. Names that followed included Burke-Hoyt Sheet Music Service of Portland and Byron-Hoyt Sheet Music Service of Portland. In 1967, it became Barker-Lins Sheet Music Service of Portland. And finally, in 1986, when Michael Sagun and David Wood bought the business, the name was shortened to Sheet Music Service, as it remains today.

In 2004, Sheet Music Service relocated from its long-time location in the heart of downtown Portland to southeast Portland on the corner of SE 8th and SE Sherman, which is one block north of SE Division. Along with the move came more retail floor space and more parking, with the new building offering added opportunity for workshops, lectures, etc.

Upon contemplation of retirement, David and Michael sold the business to their long-time friend and colleague in the industry, Richard Gore, of Pender’s Music Company. So, in November 2005, Sheet Music Service joined the Pender’s Music family of stores, with Michael Sagun staying on with the new ownership as Choral/Vocal Manager.

Pender’s Music Company has deep roots in servicing musicians and directors throughout Texas. In 1967 Harold Gore, a band director from Texas, bought a college shop that specialized in school, art and music supplies. Gore’s love for music and education paved the way for the development of a full-service sheet music store, creating a convenient environment for both educators and students alike, to access a large, in-stock inventory of music, which is now run by Harold’s son, Richard.

In addition to the headquarters, located in Denton, TX (just north of Dallas near the famed North Texas University School of Music), Pender’s Music Company has locations in Oklahoma City, OK, and North Dallas (Carrollton), TX.
