Joplin was dubbed the "King of Ragtime" after his first composition, Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime's first and most relevant hit of the genre. Prior to its success, ragtime was not accepted in serious music circles, due to its association with Tin Pan Alley.

In America, Tin Pan Alley refers to the group of New York music publishers and songwriters who dominated popular music in the late 19th century and early 20th century. During the era, popular music was composed primarily for vaudeville and Broadway, which included ballads and comic novelty songs. Other styles were eventually embraced though -- cakewalk, ragtime, jazz and blues.

The Easy Winners was composed by Scott Joplin in 1901, and is said to be one of his favorite rags.
