Voicing/Instrument CONCERT MARCH
Publisher HAROLD GORE
Sousa originally wrote/published this work in 1929. The march is actually the second march written for the ladies of the College of Industrial Arts (C.I.A.), which is now Texas Women's University, in Denton, TX.
The story goes that Sousa had written a Daughters of Denton March (see 14519200) for C.I.A., but before presenting it to them, he had garnered another commitment. That committment was to write and perform a march dedicating a monument built for Minnesota utilities magnate Wilbur B. Foshay, that was fashioned after the Washington monument. Time constraints prevented him from composing a completely new work, so the Denton march was used for the dedication, and consequently renamed Foshay Tower Washington Memorial March (see 389000). Later, Sousa composed and presented the Daughters of Texas march to C.I.A., with them being none the wiser about the switch.
