Variations on 'Rouen' was commissioned by New York City organist Stephen Tharp and was dedicated to him and to the memory of Jehan Alain, whose birth centennial we celebrate in 2011. The 'Rouen' melody is actually French, dating from at least the 18th century. The variations feature stylistic elements of several 20th-century French organist-composers, including Alain, Messiaen, Langlais, Dupre, and Durufle, which are blended into a unique synthesis. After an introduction and exposition of the theme, there is a fugue, a divertissement, a fonds d'orgue, a fileuse (spinner), a fantasie, a meditation, then a rousing and virtuosic finale. The work was premiered by Stephen Tharp in September, 2010 at the Meyerson Symphony Center in the Pipedreams Live concert. One week later, Tharp gave its European premiere at St-Sulpice in Paris. Since then, the work has been performed at numerous venues in the USA and in Europe.
