Bruch, a romantic period composer, studied many a folksong from various cultures. Kol Nidrei, meaning "all vows," originated from old Hebrew melodies, and it is a Jewish prayer sung on the eve of Yom Kippur. The popularity of the piece, when first published, led many to believe that Bruch himself was actually Jewish, even though he was in fact not (he was a German Protestant).
